Rabiah Hickey and Dr. Robert William Burk III met during a Monday night football game in October of 2010. Rabiah had recently moved back to Jacksonville and was catching up with a friend who knew Robert and made the introduction. Robert, who goes by Robin, has five children, so when the conversation of a date came up Rabiah shied away. Robin was persistent, and eventually able to convince Rabiah to give him a chance, and so she agreed to let him be her “holiday boyfriend.” After New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Easter, the couple was madly in love and decidedly more than a “holiday couple.” Throughout their relationship, Robin joked he would propose in Paris, and so when the pair finished lunch in the Eiffel Tower, Rabiah thought maybe he had had a change of heart. But Robin went a little above and beyond—proposing in a helicopter, right over the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara at sunset. Robin says he wanted to honor Rabiah’s love of the ocean. With that in mind, the couple planned to say “I do” on the edge of the beach, but moved their wedding into the driveway of their waterfront home a few hours before the ceremony.
The couple hosted their big day in their newly built home. “The toilets were installed inside the day before the wedding,” says Rabiah. “And so were the trees in the yard!” • They requested that guests wear neutral colors so they wouldn’t be pressured to pick groomsmen or bridesmaids. • An hour before the ceremony, the bride noticed her veil was missing. So after calling a few close friends to see if they had one hanging around, Rabiah’s friend who just got married brought hers over for the bride to borrow. With the bottom of Rabiah’s shoes painted aqua, they served as the “something blue.”
The bride met the wedding dress designer at the Miss World pageant in Curacao four years before the big day. There were about one dozen trips to New York and back to get the dress right—which included one trip where Rabiah met Martha Stewart at the fabric store. • During her vows, Rabiah joked she would always keep the entire family looking fabulous. • Before the dance party exploded, the Mr. and Mrs. slow danced to “Let Me Down Easy” by Billy Currington—a song Robin would text to Rabiah every time he heard it while they were dating. • Entertainment included an aerialist serving champagne and belly dancing.
