Katie Kass and Mark Swanson met in 2007 on the tennis courts of a Massachusetts summer camp where they both worked. The pair dated on and off until 2013 when they finally decided to make their relationship official. Three years after Katie moved to New Mexico to live with Mark, the pair went back to the court where it all started for a casual game of tennis, and during a much-needed water break—the temperature was in the 90s—Mark popped the question. With a theme of nautical elegance, the couple beat the summer heat and celebrated their big day this spring. But even though it wasn’t officially summertime, that didn’t stop the duo from having a beach ball send-off, which resulted in, as Katie says, “a full on beach ball fight!”
While the day was mostly calm for the pair, Katie admitted needing help from her bridesmaids after having to hide behind hotel plants to get away from guests before the wedding actually started. “My girls sprang into action and stopped a hotel guest’s Uber and yelled to stop the car. The driver probably thought she had a runaway bride on her hands,” she says. • With her mom’s help, Katie picked out beach-inspired favors like personalized cigar labels and lobster lollipops that were set in a bed of sand.
The couple was able to say their vows outside, but due to inclement weather, they had to change up the location of their reception at the last second. “It wasn’t ideal,” Katie says. “But it’s supposed to be good luck, right?” • Katie put her mother in charge of the florals. She owns a flower shop in Jax. • In addition to the three layers of carrot and vanilla cake served, Katie surprised Mark with an all-chocolate groom’s cake, topped with miniature versions of their two dogs riding skateboards, which is one of Mark’s favorite things to do.
