How to include pets in a wedding

Dressing a loyal four-legged companion for a starring role in the bridal party is almost commonplace these days. However, it does come with some specific considerations. While some dogs will do just fine in a mini suit or dress, you don’t have to go full formal—a bandana or spiffy collar can do the trick.

Making the trip down the aisle with the flower girls or ring bearers always makes for an adorable moment. They can also come down adorned with a little sign that says, “Here comes the bride.” A small chalkboard or scarf placed around their neck can let help them announce the big moment is coming. The most well-trained dogs can even help carry the bride’s train. For those going a bit less traditional, walk down the aisle as a family—bride, groom and pups all hand-in-hand (or hand in leash, as the case may be).

While not every wedding can accommodate pets, that doesn’t mean they can’t be included in the celebration. Florals are typical wedding decor, so a topiary of a dog or cat wouldn’t be totally out of place, especially if it takes place outdoors. For a more low-key way to sneak them in there’s always cake toppers fashioned after your pets. This can be especially fun for animals that would never make it to the wedding, such as cats or bunnies.

Just don’t forget about the fur babies when it comes to favors, they’ll always be appreciative of a bag of treats sent home for them.
